My Turn: Using SABLE to stop the 'young' driver

Our news department got a lot of reaction this week to our story on a young-looking but legally permitted driver.

As you may have seen on our newscasts, Christopher Anderson just got his learners permit.  Days later, while driving with his mom, he found himself getting followed by the SABLE helicopter and pulled over.

A lot of you thought that this seemed to be a bit much - maybe overuse of the department's resources.  Christopher's father was shocked at the way this was handled.  And I can understand his frustration.  It had to be a scary situation for his son.

But here's the thing.  Think about this from the sheriff's department's perspective.  They got a call that this driver was maybe 8 or 9 years old.  If that had been the case and they didn't use the helicopter and something really bad happened, they would have had a much larger PR problem on their hands.

SABLE was already in the area.  It made sense.  I think the sheriff's department probably did the right thing in this situation.

That's my turn.  Now it's your turn.   To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at yourturn@wect.com.

Just listened to you on the news this am. That boy looked like he was 8 yrs. old. sorry for him looking so young, and this will not be the only time he will be asked for his ID. The Sheriff, in my opinion, was justified in stopping him.
