"Backpack Buddies Program" helps feed hungry kids in New Hanover County

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Nourish NC is doing their part to provide food for over 200 starving children in New Hanover County.

The group is a non-profit organization that strives to strengthen community resources that connect children to healthy food and reduce food insecurity.

They started the "Backpack Buddies Program," which currently serves over 200 students in New Hanover County.

Hundreds of volunteers of all different ages came out to Murray Middle School to pack food boxes for children in need. This program provides meals each weekend to hundreds of kids from a dozen different schools across the county.

The group typically meets once a week to gather supplies, but since the school year ends soon, they packed up enough boxes to provide food for children in need for the rest of the summer.

Organizers say that some kids in our area literally have nothing to eat so it's very important for the community to come together and help out.
