BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man vacationing at Bald Head Island with his family died while swimming off the eastern end of the island.
According to authorities, Kevin Scott Roberts, 43, of Mount Lookout, West Virginia, was swimming in the waters with a large group of people Monday night.
Bald Head Island Communications Director Karen Ellison said they received at call around 7:15 p.m. that three swimmers were in distress off the eastern end of the island. Other people on the beach tried to help the swimmers but got caught in rip currents as well.
The village of Bald Head Island Water Rescue Team rescued seven swimmers from the water. Roberts was not immediately found, so they began searching for him with the help of the U.S. coast Guard and the Sable Helicopter from Wilmington.
Emergency crews found Roberts about an hour later and the Coast Guard took him to Southport where he was met by Brunswick County EMS.
Officials at the eastern end of the beach said they've had unusually high tides for the past few nights.
Roberts' family left the area after the incident to return to West Virginia.
