Elizabeth puts on her riding hat and chaps and saddles up for one intense lesson. Under the instruction of Mike and Karen Mealy at Wonderland Farms in Leland, Elizabeth takes a 17-year-old quarterhorse for a ride. But this isn't just any ride. She begins with the basics, practicing confidence building exercises around the riding ring. She learns how to post, a technique that puts her more in sync with Zip's movements. Finally, it's time for the ultimate test, a jump. Elizabeth and Zip first walk over a ground bar before moving on to the crossrails. The center of the rail is only 18 inches off the ground, but it's still a very advanced equestrian move. Once Elizabeth has completed her jump, she and Zip are presented a blue ribbon, not bad for an accomplished horse and a new equestrian. For more information on Wonderland Farms, call 655-5735.
