(Fort Bragg-AP) -- Pre-trial hearings begin today for an Army sergeant charged in a grenade attack in Kuwait that killed two officers one day before they were to move into action in Iraq. Sergeant Hasan Akbar is charged with two counts of premeditated murder and three counts of attempted premeditated murder for the attack on a group of fellow 101st Airborne Division soldiers and others on March 23rd, 2003, during the early days of the Iraq war. Fort Bragg officials have declined to release copies of the motions filed by attorneys or describe their contents. The 32-year-old Akbar will be tried at Fort Bragg because it is the home of the 18th Airborne Corps, which oversees the 101st Airborne.
