My Turn: What will it take to get you to vote?

Posted: Updated:

I'm not a prophet, but even I could have predicted another dismal voter turnout for this week's election.

What's it going to take?  How can we convince you to head to the polls to make your opinions heard?  Even the much talked about marriage amendment didn't generate a lot of voters.

This country was founded by people who fought and died for a democracy.  And now the majority of us won't honor or respect what they've done by educating ourselves and then going to the polls.

George Jean Nathan said, "Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote."

In other words, you get what you deserve commensurate with the amount of time and effort you put into the process.

If you are eligible to vote and don't, I think you lose your right to complain.

As for me, I voted, and I've reserved my right to complain about those of you who didn't.  And I also reserved my right to complain, or praise, the people who were elected and some of the decisions they'll be making in the future.

That's my turn.  Now it's your turn.  To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at yourturn@wect.com.

I took exception to your commentary for the following reasons:

I want to vote for a candidate who I trust….none so far.

I want to vote for a candidate who I believe is stating the truth when making campaign promises…since they are exempt from the oral contract laws that are enforced for regular citizens, a candidate can say whatever we want to hear and not be held accountable….so I can't believe anything except their political track record.

I am being forced to vote for candidates who can afford to run, have political clout from cronies already and are held to keep promises to big donors as in the form of contracts and so forth..how about a "none of the above category" since this will tell the media how we really feel as a citizen!

I have voted since 1979 but am becoming disenfranchised from my own country since those who run are prone to becoming millionaires on the backs of their constituents while their voters lose their homes, graduate as functional illiterates, have student loans with no job in sight or watch multi-millionaires have their companies bailed out so they can keep their private jets and numerous dwellings and stock options/holdings.

I love my country and served on the streets of NY as a cop but am so disgusted at the money thrown at politicians who look nice, speak well but don't give a hoot about anyone but themselves.

I voted today for a candidate for the Pender county school board because I know that person and know her heart is for the kids…not the notoriety!

My country is being held hostage by men and women in expensive suits who are lining their pockets…..just like the drug dealers and scum I used to lock up…no difference except the method of selling us something that will ruin our  lives!!

********

I am amazed at our nations people, they would rather waste there time complaining about politics rather than taking a little of that time voting. So if you are one of the many people that this pertains to you, you have "a right to keep your mouth shut".
