SUNSET BEACH, NC (WECT) – The mayor of Sunset Beach is trying to get his hands on documents that show just how much town employees are making, but he claims to be blocked from that information.

Before getting elected last year, Mayor Richard Cerrato published a list of how much officials in the town were making compared to other towns in the area.

In an email exchange that Cerrato forwarded to WECT.com, Gary Parker, the Town Administrator, told Cerrato that the list of salaries would only be released if Town Council approved.

Cerrato told Parker that he does not need the Council's permission to release the salary list because it's public information. He said he just wants people to know what they're entitled to know.

"I want open, honest, accountable government and I will continue to strive for that and that's my agenda," Cerrato said.

Councilwoman Carol Scott said the town will respond to any information requests as required by law.

"Council cannot and should not restrict anyone from submitting legitimate requests," Smith said via email.

Town administrator Gary Parker said the mayor had previously received the information he requested. He said the information will be provided in "due time."

"There are people in government who work hard at doing the public's business with never a thought to hiding information or to committing wrongdoing, and despite our mayor's belief, some of them work right here for [Sunset Beach,]" Parker said in an email.
