NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Representative Mike McIntyre was in New Hanover County Thursday afternoon to present the NASA Medal for Bravery to Stephen Clemmons.

Clemmons was honored for his efforts to save the lives of those who died in the Apollo One disaster in 1967.

Clemmons' medals were stolen, so McIntyre and his office worked with NASA to secure another set for him.

According to NASA, a flash fire sparked January 27, 1967 during a launch pad test of the Apollo/Saturn space vehicle being prepared for the first piloted flight. Three astronauts, Lt. Col. Virgil I. Grissom; Lt. Col. Edward H. White; and Roger B. Chaffee died in this accident.
