I think the best tourism bargain in this area is the Fort Fisher to Southport ferry. Where else can you get an enjoyable half hour boat ride for a car full of people for just $5? Well, I'll tell you where. You can do it for free on some of the other North Carolina ferry routes up north.
So why do I bring this to your attention? Because there is a big debate going on concerning the ferry rates and I smell some political "deals" that are allowing our local rates to go up and others to still be free.
I hate the term, "that's not fair." But really, that's not fair.
Now I understand that the fares do need to be higher. But come on, let's use some common sense and spread this on a more equitable basis. The new rates could be calculated and made more equitable by basing them on the length of the trip. And for "locals" that need to use the system on a regular basis, deep discounts would be in order.
The current rate structure screams of political cronyism. Don't you think it's time to throw that kind of old school politics overboard?
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
