According to police, James Blackwell, 23, fired a rifle from a home on Third Avenue into a house across the street.CHADBOURN, NC (WECT) – The police chief in Chadbourn met with SBI officials along with prosecutors Thursday, discussing an alleged accidental fatal shooting that happened at the end of 2011.
According to police, James Blackwell accidentally fired a gun while trying to clean it. A single bullet hit three people and killed 16-year-old Jasmine Thar of Charlotte.
No charges have been filed against Blackwell at this time.
Thar's godmother has started an online petition in an effort to spark a "lawful, thorough, and unprejudiced investigation."
Police Chief Steven Shaw said he's aware of the climate and petition surrounding the case. Shaw added, officials with the SBI have are taking over the case.
The petition will present the signatures to the Columbus County District Attorney and ADA April 26.
