WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Funds from the 9th Annual Willie Stargell Celebrity Golf Tournament were distributed during a ceremony Monday afternoon at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
The tournament, which was held in November 2011, raised $50,000, which was distributed to UNC Chapel Hill, Duke University Transplant Outreach programs, DaVita Emergency Fund, and to the Stargell Dialysis Center at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
The annual Willie Stargell Celebrity Golf Tournament is held in Wilmington every year at the Country Club of Landfall to raise money for a worthy cause, in honor and memory of Stragell.
Stragell passed away April 9, 2001 after a fight with kidney disease. The golf tournament began in 2003, in an effort to raise money to help improve the quality of life for another person living with kidney disease.
