COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A man from Columbus County is facing murder charges after being involved in a fatal accident near Hallsboro around 4:00 Thursday afternoon.
According to officials, Lloyd Buffkin, 32, robbed a Master Mart Convenience Store Thursday afternoon around 4:00. They say he reached across the counter to steal the cash register drawer and about $500.
Officials said deputies were responding to the robbery in Old Dock when they spotted Buffkin speeding down Highway 74/76. Buffkin crossed the Highway and hit a car driven by Joye Campbell of Chadbourn. Campbell died at the scene.
According to deputies, Buffkin hit another vehicle and injured the passengers inside. They are all expected to recover.
Buffkin is facing several charges, including murder and robbery.
According to deputies, Buffkin assaulted an officer and tried to get his gun when officials were taking him to Columbus Regional Healthcare for minor injuries. Buffkin is facing charges of assault on a government official for that incident.
Buffkin appeared in court Friday morning and asked for a court appointed attorney – Scott Dorman of Whiteville. The judge explained to Buffkin he could spend up to 47 months in jail for the common law robbery charge and could face the death penalty, depending on the factors.
Buffkin is expected to appear in court again April 11.
