According to Pender County Schools spokesperson Joyce Keith, the high school received a rumor that there would be a disturbance during lunchI'd like to give kudos to the Pender County Sheriff's Office for taking care of a small, but potentially dangerous, situation at Topsail High School last week.
What we learned was a juvenile had posted a threat that something would happen at lunchtime at Topsail High. Deputies showed up. The school system took action. And nothing happened. But yet they were able to trace this back to the juvenile in question and charge the juvenile with cyber bullying and identity theft.
Great job on their part.
I understand that children make mistakes. But the wounds of Columbine are still there and it seems like all too often we are hearing about incidents similar to what recently happened in Chardon, Ohio.
Law enforcement and the school system need to pursue these situations as aggressively as possible. And when the culprits are caught, they need to be prosecuted, and more importantly, made an example of.
Thank goodness nothing bad happened at Topsail High. And thankfully this juvenile will learn that actions like this can have serious consequences. That's the way it should be.
That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at yourturn@wect.com.
