Home invasion suspect shot and killed

HARRELLS, NC (WECT) - An attempted home invasion early Friday morning in Harrells, NC ended with one of three suspects getting killed and a person living in the home shot.

It started around 5:30 a.m. Friday, when the 911 center in Sampson County got a report of a possible home invasion on Tomahawk Highway.  Deputies got to the house and found the body of one of the suspects nearby the home.  They also found someone who lived in the home with a gunshot wound.

Deputies say three men broke into the house early Friday morning.  During the struggle, deputies say gunshots rang out and the suspects took off.  K-9 teams from Duplin and Sampson counties joined the SABLE helicopter from Wilmington in searching for the other two suspects.  They were caught around 4 p.m. Friday with help from people living in the area notifying officers of what they saw.

Deputies have charged Monquel Melvin, 27 from Parkton, and Antonio Robinson, 36 from St. Pauls. 

Melvin is charged with first degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and attempted robbery.  He was also served with warrants from Bladen and Robeson counties for driving while impaired FTA, driving while license revoked FTA, failure to heed to blue lights and siren, reckless driving FTA, resisting public officer FTA, open container after consuming FTA and discharging a weapon into occupied property.  Melvin is in the Sampson County Detention Center under a $264,000 bond.

Robinson is charged with first degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and attempted robbery.  Robinson was also served with outstanding warrants from Robeson County.  His bond is set at $251,500 bond.

The man who lived in the home is identified as Darius Howard.  He's in stable condition at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Deputies are still investigating.
