NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - One woman died in a traffic accident Thursday afternoon in Castle Hayne.
A trooper with the NC Highway Patrol says Sharon Louise Metcalfe, 64, was driving a gold Toyota coming off the I-140 exit, when she was hit by a red pickup truck, driven by David Weston Russell III of Leland, before 2:30 p.m.
Troopers say Russell, who was driving to a job interview at G.E., ran a red light going northbound on Castle Hayne Road.
He told troopers he was looking for the entrance to the plant when he ran the light.
Troopers say Russell was extremely upset and crying, saying that he had just killed someone's grandmother. Troopers say coincidentally, Russell had just left his grandmother's funeral.
Russell has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and running a red light. He was not injured.
Troopers say Metcalfe died instantly, and she was apparently headed home from the grocery store.
