WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Some UNCW students are upset about changes to an office that supports gay, lesbian and transgender students.
The university reportedly is planning to move the office of the LGBTQIA Center. The school hasn't officially announced the move -- however, students found out about the change via Facebook.
A university spokesperson says the center will relocate from the student union to the library. At that time, it will merge with the Women's Resource Center to become the Women and Gender Studies Resource Center, which is also currently housed in the library. Everyone will keep their jobs in the transition, and it will remain a part of diversity education.
Some students posted on the group's Facebook page, saying they disliked both the timing of the announcement as well as the new location.
"Why did no one know about this in advance?" asked student Ian Oglesby online. "You risk appearing hap-hazard. There is an email list for people who use the LGBTQIA Resource Office. Why was this quietly done on the eve of Spring Break?""
The center's move comes on the heels of State Senator Thom Goolsby calling for cuts to the university's Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion.
Sunday, Oglesby said that university decisions should be made with the students in mind.
"They shouldn't be made necessarily solely on a budget or offices," he said. "That is just ridiculous."
LGBTQIA stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersexual, and ally.
