WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Wilmington Regional Film Commission has released its 2011 spending results, revealing that filming and productions in the Port City spent $113 million on local goods and services last year alone, according to Wilmington Regional Film Commission Director Johnny Griffin.

The amount is based on dollars spent locally by productions.

"This was the best year we've had since 1998," said Griffin in a statement. "We fielded 178 production inquiries, and brought in Feature Films ranging from Journey 2 and Arthur Newman to Piranha 3DD. On the Television side, in addition to hosting One Tree Hill and Eastbound and Down, projects from Warner, Lionsgate, ABC Family, ABC Television, and WBTV all decided to produce here."

Last year's figures show a 156-percent increase from $44 million spent in 2010.

Griffin says that support from the state and officials, as well as tax incentives, have significantly added to the increase in numbers.

"We are thrilled with the results," said Griffin. "In previous years there were projects that wanted to film here, but they couldn't justify it. We just weren't competitive. Now, thanks to the hard work done by our State legislators and Governor, productions see our performance-based incentives as strong and stable. We've always had an outstanding crew base and excellent support services, and of course the studio, and now, it is much easier to build a case for productions to come here."

Currently, seven projects are in production in the Port City, and that number is expected to increase in the future.

The following projects were filmed in Wilmington in 2011:

  • Journey 2: The Mysterious Island (New Line Cinema)
  • Hick (Independent)
