NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office announced a new program Wednesday morning.

The new VIPR Program (Volunteer Intervention Prevention Response) consists of Sheriff's Citizens Academy graduates who have volunteered to complete the training program. Volunteers are trained for duties they will be responsible for and how to accomplish them.

The learning sessions consist of 20 hours of classroom training and 24 hours of field training officer ride along time.

Volunteers are expected to help with residential and commercial security checks, residential speed analysis and assist with traffic/parking control at special events. VIPR units are given radio communications to notify dispatchers of law enforcement situations.

If you would like to volunteer for the VIPR program, please contact the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office Community Services Unit.
