BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – District Attorney Jon David concluded that no criminal charges will be filed in connection with the death of a 21-year-old man who was in custody at the Brunswick County Jail.
Steven Allan Myers, of Cary, was found alone in his cell, hanging from his bunk by a blanket around 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 23, 2011, according to authorities. Jail personnel attempted to revive Myers until EMS arrived, but they were unsuccessful.
Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram and David made a concurrent request for an SBI investigation immediately following the incident in order to "ensure a thorough investigation into the matter by a neutral entity."
The SBI concluded its investigation and David determined that no criminal charges are warranted. David said in a news release that he met with members of the Myers' family and explained the SBI's findings to them. He also said he invited them, or a civil attorney of their choosing, to make a full inspection of the investigative file.
Myers was in custody under a $250,000 secured bond while awaiting trial on charges of assault by strangulation, communicating threats, assault on a female and assault with a deadly weapon. The charges have since been dismissed.
