Convicted felon arrested after running from traffic check

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A 19-year-old man from Tar Heel was arrested Friday after he tried to avoid a traffic check on N.C. Highway 41.

Javonte Delango Purdie, of Owen Hill Road, was charged with possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and no operator's license, according to Captain Rodney Hester with the Bladen County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's Deputies and Troopers with the N.C. Highway Patrol spotted a black Dodge Charger making a quick turn into a driveway during a traffic check at Twister Hickory Road around 11:30 a.m.

The Charger reportedly continued into a field and when Deputies made contact with Purdie, he admitted to avoiding the traffic check because he did not have a driver's license.

Hester said that Purdie told Deputies that there was a pistol underneath the driver's seat. He also said that he bought the handgun in Parkton, but didn't know if it was stolen.

After a record check, the handgun was found to be stolen from Hoke County.

Purdie was released from the Bladen County Jail after posting a $20,000 secured bond.
