BRUNSWICK COUNTY,NC (WECT) - The North Carolina Highway Patrol said one person is dead, and a police officer and another person were injured in a crash on Highway 211 in the Southport area Sunday night.
According to Highway Patrol, Officer Joshua Wesley Gaughf was driving his cruiser on 211 and was about to make a left turn. The driver of a Chevrolet Tahoe failed to slow down behind the officer as the cruiser was about to make the left turn and smashed into the cruiser, causing it to go left of center and hit a minivan head on.
The Highway Patrol said the minivan flipped and landed in a ditch. The driver of the minivan, Jack Ferguson Kirkland, 73, died at the scene. Gaughf and the driver of the Tahoe, Katherina Hewitt Cribb, were both taken to the hospital. Cribb has since been released.
The Highway Patrol said charges against the driver of the Tahoe are pending.
