WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Family, friends and colleagues of a fallen Wilmington police officer raised money for a scholarship honoring his memory Saturday morning.
They hosted a pancake breakfast fundraiser at the Applebee's on New Centre Drive.
Officer Richard Matthews was killed three years ago to the date on Sunday after he lost control of his patrol car on Shipyard Boulevard.
His sister, Tricia Matthews, says the scholarship each year goes towards a Cape Fear Community College student in the criminal justice program.
"His dream was to become a police officer, and if we can help somebody else get that dream we want to be able to do what we can," she said.
They also raise money for the scholarship through a 5K run in Matthews' hometown in Pennsylvania each year.
Tricia said officers from New York flew in for fundraiser.
