BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Former Leland Police Chief Tim Jayne filed Monday morning to appeal the decision to terminate him from his position with the department.

He discussed the case with Town Manager David Hollis, who will make a written determination within 15 days.

Hollis said Jayne feels like he was unfairly terminated after Hollis fired him in an effort to "reorganize the town." Hollis, however, believes he made the right decision.

"It gave him the opportunity to state his case," explained Hollis. "He feels like he has served the town well.  In a lot of ways he has served the town well.  But the particular issues we have discussed will give me time to look into some of those things and evaluate it and make sure the decision I made is the right decision."

Jayne was not available to comment on the situation. His job has been posted and so far about seven or eight people have applied -- none of whom are from within the police department looking to move up.

Deputy Chief Karl Smith is the acting Leland Police Chief until a long-term replacement is hired.
