WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Opponents of a proposed state constitutional
amendment showed their opposition through film this weekend. Sunday night they'll
show a film that they say shows the struggle lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender people go through.
Andy Myers helped organize the Reel Equity
Film Festival. He said members of Wilmington-based Working Films plan to travel to
travel to different parts of the state to get the word out about the North
Carolina same sex amendment.
"It's just a very mean-spirited
discrimination written into our constitution," he said. "It's going to damage all families -
heterosexual, homosexual, everyone."
Voters will get the chance to vote in May on
whether or not to make a change to the state constitution that says marriage
can only be between a man and a woman. Right now, there are laws that prohibit
same-sex marriage in North Carolina, but this would put it in the state
constitution.
Myers said the films they're showing
Saturday and Sunday show some of the issues L.G.B.T. people have in society.
"The idea of using these documentaries is to
highlight the stories of L.G.B.T. people to say these are people too," Myers
said. "Showing these stories creates empathy and understanding for people who
may not have those stories in front of them in their day to day lives."
Sunday at 7 p.m. the festival will screen
the film "Marriage Equity" at the Wilmington City Stage. It's free, but they do
encourage a $10 donation.
