WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Officials are learning more about the man that they say killed Latricia Scott, 24, just a few weeks ago, and they have reason to believe he could be linked to another murder in the area.
Police detectives call Andrew Bernard Adams, who allegedly killed Scott and then buried her in his yard off of Cowan Street, a "real life monster."
Detective Lee Odham is the case's lead detective, and Thursday, Odham told WECT.com that everything points to Adams as the lead suspect in another brutal murder from 1977 as well.
In that case, victim Barbara Lewis was 17 years old when she was raped, murdered and left in a vacant parking lot off of Eighth Street in Wilmington.
"I think justice is going to be served for Barbara Lewis either way," said Odham. "Hopefully, like I said, if everything goes properly, Mr. Adams will spend the rest of his life in prison. I think the community should feel a lot more safe now that Adams is no longer out on his own in our community. I feel better."
Odham also says Lewis' murder is the oldest murder on record at the Wilmington police department.
He says authorities followed Adams very closely throughout the years, but never had enough evidence to charge him.
Adams denied WECT's request to speak with him from the New Hanover County Jail.
