PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Around $25,000 worth of guns were stolen from a gun dealer in Rocky Point recently, and authorities say they are slowly but surely retrieving those guns from off of the streets.
Police have arrested two men for the thefts. Officials say William Leroy Jenkins and Joshua Zack, convicted felons, are accused of taking 35 guns from a Pender County gun dealer who doesn't want to be named.
Still, authorities say it will take multiple agencies to solve the case.
The weapons included everything from AR-15s to handguns.
The Pender County Sheriff's Office says, so far, they've only gotten a small number of the guns back.
However, they say the Wilmington Police Department just recovered another one this week.
Pender County officials say they're turning the case over to the ATF.
Lt. Brien Shepard says the county rarely sees gun thefts like this one.
"They took these guns, and if we did not get them off the streets, then they would continue to try to steal more guns," said Shepard. "[Which could lead to] homicides, assaults, anything like that."
Lt. Shepard says Jenkins and Zack could face federal charges, in which sentencing is usually 10 years or more per gun.
