PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - In Pender County, a man with a long criminal history is now back behind bars for another decade.

Police say jail is where Freddy Kea belongs after he was convicted of second degree rape earlier this week, and his history with the law dates back to the 1970s.

Assistant District Attorney Joe Bowman says both mementos and memories of Kea's time spent in the old Burgaw jail are still evident.

While Kea was there in 1973, he tried to escape by grabbing a jailor's gun and holding him hostage. Kea then tried to shoot his way out of the jail.

Today, bullet holes from Kea's attempt remain intact.

After the incident, Kea was convicted of armed robbery and kidnapping of a jailor, and sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison.

He was released in 1993, but landed back in trouble with the law in 2010 when he was charged with the rape of a Surf City woman.

Luckily for Kea's victim, two other men inside the house at the time beat up Kea with a conch shell.

"He is incredibly dangerous," said Bowman. "He has been suspected in other rapes that we were not able to prove, were not able to bring to trial. But he's a predator."

Attorneys classify Kea is a "level 6" for felony sentencing – meaning he's at the highest level of criminal history.

For now, Kea is scheduled to serve 10 years in prison.
