CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NC (WECT) – According to officials with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, a Fayetteville woman has been charged with nine counts of forgery and nine counts of uttering forged instruments, all of which are felony charges.

Officials say Kimberly Louise Kirby, 43, signed and cashed her daughter's best friend's social security checks.

Reportedly, the friend moved in with Kirby's family after her father passed away in 2007. The girl, who was 16 at that time, was told that upon her 18th birthday, she would be receiving social security checks for financial support via the mail.

In October 2009, Kirby told the girl that the checks had stopped coming in and that no more would arrive.

Later, detectives say a witness reported that Kirby had been receiving and cashing the checks without the knowledge of the girl.

Previously, Kirby had been charged in the case for obtaining property by false pretense by making false statements to the victim.

Kirby is scheduled to be in court Friday. Her bond is set at $90,000.
