PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Engineers with the Department of Transportation have said for years the Swing Bridge in Surf City must go. Now, they're about to make some big decisions.

Engineers are trying to determine which bridge alternative will have the least environmental impact, while respecting public input as much as possible.

A big concern has been the high-rise alternative. Some Business owners say this selection would move traffic up and over their businesses, causing a severe shortfall in profits.

While some residents in Topsail Island are against the idea, the project proposals have been narrowed down to seven alternatives.

"We are at the major milestone right now," explained DOT Divisional Construction Engineer Jackson Provost. "Once we've picked the preferred alternate and the agencies all agree to it then we'll move on into the design and ride away and working towards construction."

The DOT will hold a public comment review February 29 where officials hope to choose the most preferred alternative.
