PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT)- This will be the 37th year that a farm in Pender County opens its doors to summer campers.
Ashton Farms, owned and operated by Sally Martin, is a place where children can get away from the television and computer and go outside and experience life on a farm.
Martin is as hands on as can be when it comes to organizing all of the events the campers will get to experience. She personally drives a school bus from Burgaw into Wilmington each day to bring the children to camp.
"I live for the summers," says Martin. "There's nothing I would rather be doing."
Everywhere you look at Ashton Farms, a warm and friendly animal is right around the corner. Puppies, bunnies, chickens and geese, horses, pigs, goats and more all call Ashton Farms home.
The children love to be part of their care, so they get to feed them and walk them as needed.
Swimming in the lake is also a favorite activity among campers, and for those who prefer dry land, archery and arts and crafts are popular activities. They can also canoe, fish or ride horses.
If you can't wait until summer, Martin says she welcomes schools to bring students by for a field trip, and the farm can be used for birthday parties as well.
Ashton Farm is located at 5645 US Highway 117 S. Burgaw, NC 28425.
