BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – Carl Brunson is now forced to spend his retirement without his wife after a man with an extensive criminal record hit and killed her with his vehicle.

Officials say that Danny Dion Chase of Shallotte is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle after troopers say he ran a red light at the intersection of Highways 17 and 211.

According to troopers, Chase was driving with a revoked license Jan. 18 when he hit and killed Barbara Brunson, a former school teacher from Cumberland County who had just settled into life of retirement at Sunset Harbor.

Carl said Barbara was making a quick shopping trip to Walmart, and it was the last time he got to see her alive.

Now, Carl wants to make sure justice will be served.

"He should have never been behind the wheel," said Carl. "He was communicating threats to women. Nine pages of a criminal background history. It's just a little disgusting that somebody could do that and hurt somebody else's family like my family or take somebody else's family like my family was taken from me."

Chase has faced numerous charges in the past including assault on a female and driving while impaired.

District Attorney Jon David says the investigation is ongoing and that pending blood test results, it's possible that more charges could be filed against Chase.
