NAVASSA, NC (WECT) – Some Brunswick County residents are demanding for a sewer connection - and now they're closer to a solution.
People who live in one part of Navassa say leaders promised them sewer service by 2008. It hasn't happened yet.
Monday night, town leaders met to talk about the best way to make it happen. The meeting centered on a public hearing, and it gave some upset people just what they've waited for a chance to speak out. But like any public hearing, the topic is narrowed down. Council wanted to focus on finding a process for grant funding.
There are three infrastructure grants to consider. Residents want to make sure that any grant will go toward getting their sewer hookup moving forward.
The public hearing slid away from the grants, and into the town's on-going issue with the IRS and the $34,000 fine. Mayor Eulis Willis says that's a separate issue for another time. Right now they are focused on infrastructure.
For all this infrastructure and grant talk, the town brought in an outside consultant. During the meeting, someone asked the mayor why no one was taking minutes. He says the clerk went home earlier after technical problems and he kept minutes himself.
Navassa Town Council will have a second public hearing on sewer hookups once the grants are chosen.
