CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - People in Carolina Beach gathered to enjoy some barbeque for a good cause Saturday as part of the first backyard barbeque sponsored by the organization Step Up For Soldiers.
Volunteers said it was the biggest one-day fundraiser for the organization, and they plan on bringing it back year after year.
"It's a way of getting people out keeping awareness of the troops and raising money for soldiers with mobility issues," said Thomas Russell of the group.
More than 3,500 people came out to the event, and 20 contestants entered a contest for the best barbeque. Judges voted on their favorites.
Step Up For Soldiers works to enhance the lives of disabled veterans and their families.
All the meat for the event was donated by Harris Teeter.
