COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) – The fire marshal in Columbus County say a fire
that destroyed a home in Boardman started accidentally in a bathroom.
Officials say the fire began around 10 a.m. off Ivey Road. Firefighters from
Evergreen, Cerro Gordo and Fair Bluff responded to the scene and it took them
approximately 45 minutes to put the fire out.
Investigators said children were home and smelled smoke coming from the
center of the house. They went next door and called 911.
Officials said they were able to respond quickly, despite the fact they are
volunteer firefighters and the fire happened on a weekday when most of them
were at work.
