KURE BEACH, NC (WECT) - Folks in Fort Fisher celebrated history with a bang this weekend. A 32-pound cannon demonstration left visitors covering their ears.
The historic site hosted the "Light of the Great Armada" event to remember the 147th anniversary of the Battle of Fort Fisher.
Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Williams travels around the world with the Marine Corps Historical Company. The group presents historical programs to Marines and the public.
"From our point of view what this battle and our involvement during this battle has had an impact on us not only as Marines," he said. "Subsequently we used that as a tool to teach the impact that war has had on American society today."
Historians loaded a cannon for a couple of demonstrations. But, 19th century technology isn't always all it's cracked up to be. The second round during Sunday's 2 p.m. demonstration didn't fire. So, the crew had to flush out the ammunition with water.
