NAVASSA, NC (WECT) - Navassa Town Council held its regulary-scheduled meeting Thursday night, and it was the first time that citizens voiced their opinions about a town clerk who was fired in November, then rehired in December.
It was a heated meeting, and citizens in the small town expressed outrage at recent decisions and actions from city leaders.
One woman in attendance said it was a "travesty" that the clerk was rehired and would be receiving back pay.
Others expressed anger about the town's decision to place sewer lines on property reportedly owned by the mayor.
Additionally, residents criticized the town for being charged a penalty of nearly $35,000 for failure to file W-2 forms with the federal government.
Town council members and the mayor refused to answer any of the
citizens' questions during the public comment period, saying they didn't want to
get into a back-and-forth debate during the meeting.
