BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Some thieves have been stealing TVs in Brunswick County, and the thefts have police in Oak Island increasing their patrols and residents concerned.
Detectives say since November 1, crooks have broken into more than 40 homes along Beach Drive and Dolphin drive.
Rather than jewelry or money going missing, officials say more than 50 flat-screen TVs have disappeared.
Pat and Bill Higbie live in Charlotte, but own a beach house along one of the streets that's been targeted. They say that they consider themselves lucky that no one has broken into their house yet.
Locals say the recent economy could serve as an explanation to why the TVs are being stolen.
But crooks aren't the only ones low on money. During these tough economic times, more beachfront homeowners are looking for new sources of income.
They are turning to the internet, trying to lure in new renters by showcasing any and everything their houses have to offer – like flat-screen TVs.
Residents are doing what they can to stay alert for anything unusual.
"I've been coming out at night looking at the stars, but actually looking up and down the road seeing if I see flashlights in houses," said Pat.
In the two months since the crime spree began, Oak Island's investigators have had a few leads, but so far, they've made no arrests.
