CUMBERLAND COUNTY,NC (WECT)- Cumberland County Sheriff's Detectives have charged a Spring Lake man with shooting a woman and firing at law enforcement officers who were called to the crime scene.

On Saturday, January 14, 2012 deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at 3110 Huntley Drive that involved a firearm. It was reported that a female had been shot and had run to a next door neighbor's home for help.  When deputies arrived, they found 36-year old Leon Gainey sitting on the front porch of his residence at 3110 Huntley Drive with a shotgun. The victim, 24-year old Heather Carini, who also lives in the home, had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.

Deputies repeatedly instructed Gainey to drop the weapon.  He refused and fired off two rounds, causing deputies to seek cover for their safety and return fire. Gainey was struck once in the side by gunfire.

Carini told investigators the incident took place due to an argument between Gainey and her mother.  There also were two, two-year-old children in the residence at the time of the incident.

Gainey and Carini were both transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where they are being for their wounds.

Meanwhile, Gainey is charged with two counts of assault with a firearm on a law enforcement officer, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, possession of a firearm by felon and assault in the presence of a minor.
