BURGAW, NC (WECT) – A chilly winter morning is the perfect time for a cup of freshly roasted coffee. It can be a great pick-me-up to get you going.
The new owners of Burgaw's only coffee house are on the verge of changing from the coffee they are now serving to coffee that will be freshly ground every day in their own shop.
Barry and Donna Klingel moved to Burgaw when Barry became the town's Postmaster, but after over 30 years working for the United States Postal Service, Barry submitted his resignation because of an event that took place.
"Last December, a good friend of mine passed away, and that night, I went online and put in my retirement," said Barry. "I just said life is too short, and there are other things my wife and I wanted to do."
The dream of opening a coffee shop of their own was something the Klingels had thought about often. In August, it became a reality.
In Burgaw, you don't see the Starbucks sign, or a Port City Java franchise, but every day, hundreds of people make a stop for their morning caffeine at Courthouse Coffee, located about a half a block away from the historic Pender County Courthouse.
Recently their brand of coffee got recognition in a local publication.
"We sent a sample to them and the next thing that we knew, we were in the magazine and they recognized Courthouse Coffee for the great coffee we serve here," said Klingel.
And while their customers say they enjoy the current coffee they serve, the Klingels are just a month away from starting the process of roasting their own coffee.
"The difference there is in a freshly roasted cup of ground coffee is remarkable," explained Klingel.
Of course, there are other items you can buy at Courthouse Coffee, but if you're looking for that perfect cup, give yourself a few minutes to stop in. They'll have to charge you for the coffee, but the big smiles and friendly customer service are always on the house.
