Federal government backs NC shrimpers

(New Orleans-AP) -- The federal government has given preliminary approval to a petition from U-S shrimpers seeking duties on imported shrimp. The ruling by the U-S International Trade Commission means the shrimpers' petition will be sent to the Department of Commerce, which will determine if foreign imports have been dumped on domestic markets. American shrimpers filed the antidumping petition against imports of frozen and canned shrimp from six South American and Asian countries on New Year's Eve. They argue that cheap imports have destroyed 40 percent of U-S shrimp processing jobs.
