CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - Some state money is headed to Carolina Beach. Now town officials need to figure out how to use it.
Governor Bev Perdue announced Wednesday that Carolina Beach will receive a grant from the N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund in the amount of $369,179. The money is meant to help fund land acquisition, development and renovation of public park and recreation areas.
Town Manager Tim Owens says Carolina Beach will have up to two years to decide how to use the money. The plan would be to purchase the Guy Johnson Motel property near Carolina Beach Avenue from the town's non-profit CBP3.
The town council will hold a workshop with members of CBP3 on January 18 to decide how to proceed.
Carolina Beach has the option to purchase the property, but officials still have to decide what to do with it. They can either sell it, enhance it, or build a brand new pier.
Town Manager Owens says they need to discuss the best possible short-term and long-term options before they make any decisions.
