Terminated town manager could still get a year of salary pay

OAK ISLAND, NC (WECT) – Council members in Oak Island will meet Tuesday to discuss how to pay fired Town Manager Jerry Walters.

Walters was fired in December and has made two requests for severance since.

Staff members in Oak Island have been researching how other town managers who have been fired in the past have been compensated.

Walters' contract says he is entitled to a year of salary pay.  When benefits are added, the amount comes to over $160,000.

Because the amount is so large, council will have to agree to a budget amendment to approve paying the contract from the general fund balance.
