Fighting fires with education

CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WECT) - About 800 firefighters assembled at the Cape Fear Community College North Campus to work on their firefighting skills this weekend.

Firefighters from all over the state took classes and did some hands-on training. It's all part of the Pender County Firefighting College. They practiced putting out indoor and outdoor fires.

Students said it's all about team work.

"If you're the person going in, you're talking to your team behind you and they completely rely on you," said James Coates from Wallace, NC. "If you lose one of them, lose contact, they may be in a different room and before you realize it, now you've got more than one victim."

CFCC holds the training weekend several times a year for anyone from beginners to chief officers.
