NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Workers with the IT department of New Hanover County are investigating an apparent social security number breach that was discovered in recent days.
County spokesperson Charles Smith said a citizen brought the issue to the county's attention after discovering at least one social security number in an attachment on some meeting minutes from 1983. The county has computerized its meeting minutes dating back years.
As it turns out, more than 100 social security numbers were open to the public on the county's website server. All the numbers are from people working for the county in 1983.
Smith says the county has pulled the attachment and everything in that folder from the computer. IT workers are checking to make sure no social security numbers are on those documents before putting them back on-line.
