What are the best ways to cure a hangover?

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – People will be ringing in the New Year this weekend with celebrations that can lead to a ringing headache.  While not drinking alcohol is the best way to prevent a hangover, there are some ways to help cure the pain.

Doctors say alcohol tends to be a high glycemic or blood sugar rush at the time you're drinking, so you may wake up with a low blood sugar level.

"Something sweet may actually replace the same feeling that alcohol had," explained Dr. Douglas Dixon who says the best way to prevent a hangover is by eating the night you're actually drinking.  If you're not able to do that, Dixon said you should immediately hydrate yourself the next morning.

"It doesn't matter if it's Gatorade.  Water should be fine," explained Dixon.  "You don't need a sugary drink but what sugar will do, which alcohol does as well is it sort of replenishes your body."

There is no guarantee that products that use Chinese Herbs or the proprietary formula of "Hangover Gone" and "Hangover Cure" can actually cure a hangover.

If you want to guarantee you won't have a hangover, don't drink any alcoholic beverages.  But for those who choose to partake, Dixon says to have a piece of the "hair of the dog that bit you and have a mimosa in the morning."

Always remember to take caution when drinking and know your limits.  Designate a sober driver or call a cab to get you home safely if you've been drinking.
