BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - There's a new mayor in the town of Sunset Beach in Brunswick County, but after just one meeting, the town council has called for a special meeting regarding the rules set for elected officials.
Specifically, town council has called for a special meeting for the purpose of the "review of council and mayor authority."
The language in the notice has Mayor Cerrato scratching his head, and Mayor Pro Tem Lou De Vita keeping tight lips.
Richard Cerrato is a self-proclaimed sharp nosed person who says he is an actively involved resident of Sunset Beach, doing everything he can to watch the checks and balances of local government.
After Cerrato won the mayor seat in November, some council members want to add damage control within town government
Cerrato says disagreements started almost immediately after he addressed the public during the swearing in meeting.
"They executed the three minute rule without any warning, and the pro tem mayor gaveled me," said Cerrato.
However, DeVita says that's just how the meetings are run.
Now, preparing for the second meeting, the tension remains clear.
DeVita says the goal of Wednesday's meeting is "to establish the operational boundaries of the mayor and council."
When asked if the mayor had crossed any boundaries, DeVita said yes, but wouldn't elaborate on any specifics. Still, DeVita says no one is out to limit authority.
"And you know, if everybody accepts their role as the role that they were given, then we'll be fine," he said.
Cerrato says he has a couple ideas of what might be brought up in the meeting, but he doesn't wish to speculate.
