NHHS student shot in the leg, taken to hospital for treatment

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Wilmington Police are investigating a reported shooting Wednesday afternoon.

The shooting took place around 12:30 this afternoon near 12th Street between Chestnut and Princess Streets.

According to a spokesperson for New Hanover County Schools, a student from New Hanover High School was shot in the leg while walking in the area.  Authorities said she took herself to the hospital.

The shooting did not happen on the campus of NHHS, according to the spokesperson.

Police say they have checked out the area around the reported shooting and have not found witnesses at this point.

NHHS went on lockdown at 1:10 p.m. for less than five minutes because of this incident.

Principal Todd Finn sent out an AlertNow message to NHHS parents.

Finn said the student broke school rules by leaving campus during the school day. He said she left during third period.

"That's real unfortunate," Finn said. "That's no longer our jurisdiction and there's not a whole lot we can do for you when you make that choice to walk off of campus. The lesson learned here is it's best to stay in school and be here where you belong so we can look after you."
