From the church to the charts, Simpson's musical career began in Christian music and she has recorded four pop albums since November '99. She is currently promoting her latest LP "In This Skin". A second season of the weekly reality hit on MTV, the "Newlyweds" returned January 21st. Simpson co-stars with her husband and ex-98 band-member Nick Lachey. She also makes guest appearances on FOX's "That 70s Show".
Born July 10, 1980, in Waco, Texas, Simpson was initally known as one of America's many teeny-bop singers resurrecting the country's traditions of bubblegum pop. She won her spurs with December 1999's Top 5 single "Wanna Love Your Forever". She began singing at age 12 in her local Baptist church, where her psychologist father served as youth minister. After unsucessfully auditioning for the Mickey Mouse Club she remained in the contemporary Christian field and recorded an album's worth of material until the gospel label about to release it folded. Instead she worked the Christian Youth Conference circuit with her father, selling copies of her home-recorded debut album after performances. A copy of the album reached Tommy Mottola of Columbia Records, who believed Simpson could be groomed for a secular audience.
Simpson's full debut album, released in 1999, included the single "Woman In Me", with guest vocals by Destiny's Child. She is currently promoting her latest album release "In This Skin".
Jessica Simpson is scheduled for a special performance at UNCW's Trask Coliseum on Friday, April 2, 2004, at 8:00 p.m.
