A dead baby was found Tuesday morning at home in the 100 block of South 13th Street in Wilmington. Police say the death is not considered suspicious and the incident is being treated as a medical situation by EMS.
"She basically made a statement to hospital personnel that she had been pregnant and was no longer pregnant," said Smith. "Based on that information, and that's all the information we had, we came out here to conduct an investigation on a suspicion of death of unknown origin."
Authorities roped off several homes with crime scene tape and were searching the front yard of a house. A body was seen being carried out underneath a white cloth.
Detectives also went to New Hanover Regional Medical Center Tuesday to interview a potential witness.
"We didn't know exactly what we had, but as we are seeing more details from the young lady and verified it with some of the information we were able to determine on scene, we basically have a medical situation and not a crime," explained Smith.
Smith said investigators were called to the scene before many details were released about the situation.
"As we get more information and determine what we really have, we start collapsing the situation - categorizing it for what it really is," said Smith.
The deputy said it did not appear the baby would have lived had it been delivered in the hospital, but could not say for sure.
According to police, the baby was not alive when it was born so no charges will be filed.
