A final plan is in place for repairs to the Wrightsville Beach drawbridge, the only link between the beach town and the mainland. The Department of Transportation will close the bridge starting February 19 from 10pm to 6am, and again on February 22-27 from 10pm to 6am.
During that time the DOT will offer a shuttle service. People should call 279-6292 if they need a ride on the mainland, and 279-4421 if they're on Wrightsville Beach. All cars will be parked in the Plaza East shopping center in Wilmington, or Redix store in Wrightsville Beach. People will be allowed to walk across the bridge, then the shuttles will take them where they need to go. If an emergency occurs, construction will stop so vehicles can cross the bridge.
Bluewater, a popular restaurant in Wrightsville Beach is planning ahead also. They will seat their last customers around 8:30pm to allow time for employees and customers to get over the bridge before it closes. They say the closure may effect their business, but it's worth it.
The DOT says the repairs made during those six days should last for another 50 years.
